Best interpreters of Scriabin's music

唔知大家覺得有邊啲鋼琴家interpret Scriabin 得好呢?

我個人認為有 Vladimir Sofronitsky 同埋 Grigory Sokolov...

If you don't mention Horowitz, his fans will be seriously disappointed.

Richter, Gilels, Sokolov, Ashkenazy, Ogdon, Pletnev, Hamelin have made some good recordings, too.

Download price of about HKD200 for his complete piano works sound attractive to me:

Horowitz did pull off electrifying performances in some of Scriabin's works, e.g. Etude Op.8 No.12, Op.42 No.5... But for the other works, I found his interpretation does not really succeed in reflecting the philosophical views and implications of Scriabin... I agree with you that Richter has made some good recordings, especially Scriabin's Piano Sonata No.5. Hamelin's performances are very technically assured and virtuosic, but they somehow lacked fire in my opinion.

She may not be well known in HK but when I was learning Scriabin's etude Op. 42 no.5 and his sonata no.5, my teacher then told me to listen to Ruth Laredo's recordings.
Since then, I only listen to her Scriabin when I have trouble picking out the melodic lines and finding the balance between clarity and passionate playing.

FYI, Ruth Laredo was held at high esteem by piano students in the 1970s - 1990s in USA when she was teacher at both Yale and Curtis. I am a little surprised to learn that her teacher/mentor was Rudolf Serkin (well, Peter Serkin, his son, was brilliant interpretation of contemporary music so Rudolf must be a good teacher of contemporary music). I had one good friend who studied with Ruth Laredo before and said she loved Phil Collins, the rock & roll star - talking about music diversity:smile_35:

Wow both the Etude and Sonata are quite demanding! I am learning the Sonata as well, and find it challenging yet rewarding.

I have listened to Ruth Laredo's interpretation of Piano Sonata No.5 again and I have to admit that her playing is very clean. IMHO her interpretation somehow lacked the fantastical intoxication and ecstasy (which is definitely an essential element in Scriabin's music). I personally would also prefer the beats being less stringent in her playing. Anyway, thanks for your recommendation and her recordings of Scriabin's works can be quite useful in studying the scores and delineating phrases.

BTW just came across this recording of Scriabin Fantasie by Lazar Berman:
