Symphonies in unpopular keys

Another "blow-water" post only.

Often composers wrote symphonies in popular keys like C major, C minor, D major, D minor, Eb major, E minor, F major, G major, G minor, A major, A minor and Bb major.  I am sure that you can name a few symphonies amongst these keys by great composers without much difficulties.

Probably there are good reasons behind why these giants chose to write in these keys, e.g. easier to accommodate the range of the different music instruments, easier to play, less writing of notations (in the old days no computer mah!), etc.

So, are there any symphonies (at all) in those "odd" keys, like C# minor, C#/Db major, D#/Eb minor, E major, F minor, F# minor, F#/Gb major, G#/Ab minor, Ab major, Bb minor and B major?  Off head, I can only think of Mahler No 5 in C# minor, Tchaikovsky No 4 in F minor, Schubert No 8 "Unfinished" in B minor, and Tchaikovsky No 6 in B minor.  If browsing around, then:

C# minor : Mahler No 5, Prokofiev No 7, Myaskovsky No 2, Bax No 5
Db major : Myaskovsky No 25
Eb minor : Prokofiev No 6, Myaskovsky No 6 "Revolutionary"
E major : Haydn Nos 12 & 29, Schubert No 7, Bruckner No 7, Glazunov No 1, Myaskovsky No 20
F minor : Tchaikovsky No 4, Bruckner No 00 "Study Symphony", Shostakovich No 1, Szymanowski No 1, Myaskovsky Nos 10 & 24, Williams No 4
F# minor : Glazunov No 2, Myaskovsky No 21
F# major : Korngold Symphony in F# major
G# minor : Myaskovsky No 17
Ab major : Elgar No 1, Bax No 7
Bb minor : Myaskovsky Nos 11 & 13, Kabalevsky No 3, Shostakovich No 13 "Babi Yar"
B major : Haydn No 46, Shostakovich No 2 "To October"
B minor : Schubert No 8 "Unfinished", Tchaikovsky No 6, Shostakovich No 6, Myaskovsky Nos 7, 11 & 22

(btw, wiki has full lists...)

So, symphonies in E major, F minor and B minor aren't really odd.  And, Myaskovsky... starts making me interested in exploring his works.

I don't know about the keys. But the strangest combination of two symphonies in a program (same concert) is:

John Adams' Doctor Atomic Symphony; followed by
Ikuma Dan's "Hiroshima" Symphony

Hi Symphonicdance,

I was listening to John Adams' China Gates (for piano solo), and then tried to find the sheet music to download. Suddenly I found the Youtube version of Dr. Atomic Symphony which was very interesting musically.

I then googled "Dr. Atomic Symphony" and the concert review in your above link came up:-)

This is how I discovered these two exotic symphonies:smile_35: :smile_35:
